About.

WHO ARE YOU?

Allow me to introduce myself...

Hi, I'm Kevin Robert Mitchell, a highly experienced freelance digital Creative Director and Design Consultant. Originally from the UK, now based in the beautiful city of Hamburg in northern Germany.

I specialise in digital product design, visual design, digital branding, UI/UX, and design consulting. I’m a hands-on designer, with a proven track record of driving innovative and impactful digital experiences for some of the world’s biggest brands.

PROJECTS

From Automotive to Medical Technology to Streaming.

So, what kind of projects have I worked on then?

Well, throughout my career, I’ve been involved in a vast range of projects across multiple industries:

Automotive, Banking, Cosmetics, Consumer Electronics, Energy, E-Commerce, E-Learning, Fashion, Interiors, Logistics, Luxury Goods, Medical Technology, News Media, Real Estate, Sportswear, Streaming

I've successfully led projects across diverse platforms, from immersive live events to user-centric e-learning platforms, interactive campaign websites to innovative e-commerce solutions, and impactful digital branding and intuitive mobility apps.

Let’s not forget the automotive websites, an online grocery platform, multiple design systems, a banking app for doctors, and a streaming platform for a billion people in Asia.

All through my work designing these digital products and services, I have consistently showcased my versatility and commitment to excellence.

It’s also been a great deal of fun.

CAREER

From Agencies to Start-ups to Fortune 500.

Over the last 20 years, I’ve had the good fortune to work together with some extremely talented individuals and amazing teams.

As an independent designer, I’ve worked with all kinds of agencies – Advertising, Design, and Digital.

These have included:

I've also collaborated extensively with startups and worked in-house at leading companies such as Eventim, Jio, XING, and ZEISS.

During these types of projects on the client side, I typically work as a Design Consultant, offering strategic insights to optimise the company's design strategy, refining existing projects, or conceptualising and designing new endeavours.

LONDON TO DÜSSELDORF

From London Calling to Trans Europa Express.

After studying photography and graphic design in the UK for 5 years, I began my career in London and worked as a Senior Multimedia Designer.

I worked across various disciplines during this time, including motion design, event production, multimedia, web design, and photography.

In 2001, I was offered a position in a digital agency in Germany, with an opportunity to work on the Toyota and Lexus accounts.

So, I relocated to sunny Düsseldorf, the city on the Rhine, and the spiritual home of Kraftwerk and Joseph Beuys.

Since 2009, I have been based in Hamburg in the north of Germany, where I work as a freelance digital Design Consultant and Creative Director.

JOINING THE DOTS

Finding Inspiration.

“You can find inspiration in everything. If you can’t, then you’re not looking properly. That means looking, and seeing. It’s all about using your eyes. It’s all there for you, free of charge.”

Paul Smith,
British Fashion Design Legend

There you have it, an inspirational quote about inspiration from our main man in London, Paul Smith. I can’t argue with that. I think we can safely say he knows what he’s talking about.

That elusive and difficult-to-nail-down thing we call inspiration. What is it, where does it come from, and how can we get hold of some?

I like to take a leaf out of Sir Paul’s proverbial book of tips and tricks, and grab my inspiration from anywhere I can find it.

This could be anything from a simple walk around the city with a camera, a visit to a gallery, a new book on photography, some fresh new vinyl, a concert, or a trip to Southeast Asia. Anything goes.

Inspiration really can come from anywhere. It could be the cinematography in a new movie, an obscure documentary, an old novel, or a late-night discovery from a YouTube rabbit hole.

All sorts of experiences, visuals, and conceptual ideas can help solve a design challenge at a later date.

Music curated by my favourite DJ Gilles Peterson is a great source of inspiration for me, and funnily enough, Mr Peterson is a firm believer in the concept of ‘joining the dots’ between genres, styles and musical artists. I kid you not.

The point for me is to have as wide a range of interests and references to draw from as possible, and I can then allow these ideas to feed back into my design work.
